This technical manual by National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) provides information on the ground water prospects maps, which includes the following chapters: the map contents, scientific rationale behind preparing the contents, referencing of the contents on the ground and usage of the maps in the field. The manual facilitates the hydrogeologists and engineers of state line departments in identifying drinking water sources and locating site specific recharge structures.
The over-exploitation of groundwater for drinking purposes, all over the country is well documented. Among the various initiatives taken by the government to achieve sustainability of the resource, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has collaborated with NRSC, to prepare of ground water prospect maps/HGM Maps. These maps contain comprehensive data on ground water using remote sensing technology and Geographic Information System (GIS). Further the maps serve as a reference database for identifying potential locations both for drilling wells and constructing recharge structures specific to the site.
